LEADERSHIP & BOARD

Sam Fleming, Longtime Board Member, Dies

Sam Fleming, who served on the Commonwealth Fund’s Board of Directors from 2003 until 2013, chairing its Audit and Compliance Committee for most of that time, died in May 2018. A chemical engineer, Fleming developed a company, Decision Resources, which became a leading global information source on promising emerging technologies impacting the chemical, biomedical, and information technology industries.

On the occasion of his retirement from the Board, his colleagues recognized his distinguished service and the qualities that made him so effective: a dedicated focus on mission, strategy, and organizational and financial health; attention to detail; business acumen; entrepreneurial instincts; seasoned investor skills; and quiet but emphatic leadership when the occasion called for it.

Sheila Burke Named Board Vice Chair

Sheila Burke, a faculty research fellow at the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy and a member of the faculty at the Harvard Kennedy School, was named Vice Chair of the Commonwealth Fund Board of Directors starting in November 2018. She has served on the Fund’s board since 2013. Burke was chief of staff to Senator Bob Dole from 1986 to 1996. Earlier, as deputy staff director for the Senate Finance Committee, she was responsible for legislation relating to Medicare, Medicaid, and other health programs.

Diana Davenport and Mary Mahon Retire from Fund After Two Decades

Two long-serving staff members retired from the Commonwealth Fund at the end of 2018. Mary Mahon, who served as Vice President for Public Information, joined the Fund in 1997 after spending her early career in government affairs and communications at Planned Parenthood of New York City. Known for her passion and her commitment to the Fund’s mission, she played a key role in raising the public profile of the Fund and its work.

Considered one of the top human capital executives in New York’s foundation world, Diana Davenport joined the Commonwealth Fund in 1998 after two decades in the nonprofit sector. As the foundation’s Vice President for Administration, she was an ardent champion of quality improvement in the areas of human resources and benefits, information technology, risk management, and building operations.
